Has using cash at the bar become frowned upon?
I typically only pay with cash at bars, it's easier for me to keep track of my spending/drinking and simplifies tipping. I also don't need to worry about closing out when the night is over.
However, last night I visited a north side bar and when I paid cash (only had a $50 to begin the night) they had to root through two drawers to scrounge up my change in $5s and seemed annoyed at the ordeal. I've never been to a bar that didn't have a few hundred of various denominations in their available fund.
When I returned to the bar for another drink, a different bartender than the one who first served me seemed shocked that I didn't have an open tab and also seemed to struggle accepting my cash and making change. So I'm wondering if this has somehow gone out of fashion for certain establishments? I know we are moving in the direction of a cashless society but I always viewed food & drink establishments as a last bastion of cash transactions.
Is it just that most patrons don't carry cash anymore so they've naturally adapted to it? Are businesses reluctant to keep cash due to threat of burglary? I thought credit card transaction fees were a pain in the ass for them and cash was still king but maybe things have changed?
