The best thing about Flick
I have questions about Flick’s tactical fit with the personnel we have but honestly, the best thing about him is that he is an outsider who won’t be party to the “amigos fc” culture that’s long been part of this club with Valverde, Setien, Koeman, and Xavi. There’s a good chance that players who perform below expectations will see their chances reduced simply because Flick will have a more professional relationship with them. With Xavi we’ve seen a clear tendency to rely on what seems personal opinion/feelings with players like Ferran, Roberto, Lewandowski, Cancelo, and Roque (who should’ve at least seen some minutes whichever way you cut it). Flick, I hope more than anything, will represent a departure from a club culture that rewards mediocrity in the name of loyalty. This culture has been at the center of a lot of failures, and yes, it is still going to be present in the upper management because, well, that’s just how Barca is. But under coaches like Pep and Lucho this culture had been kept away from the dressing room. It’s not going to be easy and I’m sure some feathers will be ruffled but the club needs this shift.
