Tips for first timer

First time playing zombies. Any advise how to power up weapons? What is the best way to get good weapons? Do i pack a punch my starting weapon first and upgrade the rarity? Or do i buy a wall weapons and do the pack a punch, and disregard my starting weapon? Please advise. Thanks!
