Granny squares... can someone please explain they are popular?

I'm a long-time knitter and have just started to learn how to crochet. I've seen many examples of items made with granny squares but I don't understand why this technique is used. It seems like a lot of work to make separate pieces and then have to sew them together. What is the attraction?
