Help me escape my ELP fee-ridden financial hellscape
TLDR: I used to be a Dave-disciple and ended up using one of his then ELP's to setup brokerage accounts for me back around 2015. I know the fees are garbage, and I morally do not want to support this model anymore. But what should I do, I'm totally overwhelmed on how and where to transition funds.
When I got setup with the ELP, they originally got me into American Funds which didn't have the upfront fee structure. Since then, for a few rollovers and future funds they have been putting me into direct Raymond James funds with that garbage 5.75% or whatever upfront fee.
I know this setup is no good, but where and how should I move these funds? Has anyone done this type of transition recently? What were the logistics like of moving the funds out?
I liked the concept of having a financial advisor, but I did not see any meaningful proactive support or results so I am over it. At this point I'm guessing I'd be best off throwing it all in a Vanguard (VTSAX) or Fidelity target fund, right? Surely it would perform on par if not better and have way less fees.
Any pro tips here from anyone else that has escaped the ELP/SmartVestor hell? I'm ready to stop wasting money on fees and indirectly supporting the evil overlord. Has anyone had a good experience with their low-fee brokerage?
