What does the star ratings mean to you ?

I had this argument with a girl I use to talk to, she use to rate every movie very highly, whereas im more stingy with what I give movies.

For example for me 2.5 stars is an average movie, its half of the largest value? Whereas she would berate me for giving a movie I enjoyed yet, thought was only okay 2.5 stars, especially when she would rate it so highly.

So am I too cynical, or is she too kind?
