Where is everyone?

Since the update it seems like less and less people are playing the game. I frequently see zero or only 1 or 2 other players in a game.

I see that according to the leaderboard there are 4 player slots per game. Wasn't there a lot more than that before?

I suspect the reduction was due to game lag, but I could be wrong.
