Newbie to meditation

I have started mediating recently, the reason i started mediating because i heard that it helps you strengthen your observer self that sees your emotions/ daily thoughts.

But when i start mediating i am stuck with chatter with my self. It talks to me. Like " you mediating again. Oh will this help? Are you doing it right?" And when i go back to focusing on my breath all this talks disappears There are no thoughts of day to day reality.

My question is, is this suppose to happen? Am i being the observer self? Do you have to do anything to not identify with this chatter? Or is the chatter okay? What is the process how a walkthrough of someone mediating looks like?
