How to start your personal statement?

I’ve rewritten my essay so many times this week my brain has quite literally turned to mush. The main thing I can’t wrap my head around is how to form my first paragraph. On some sites I see professors talk about not caring about you getting your first microscope and to avoid cliches. I’ve also been told by an advisor in the career center to make it like an elevator pitch, starting with your name and major. I know it should at least clearly state your research interests and goals for the future but beyond that I’m lost. Does anyone have any advice on keeping it interesting without making it sound too fluffy?
