Suggestion: Le Samorai

A late 1960s French crime film, Le Samorai is about a hit man named Jef who goes on the run after murdering a club owner. This film isn't as fast paced as it might sound by that description; the plot is rather slow and there are multi-minute long stretches without dialogue; but seeing how the law tries to find Jef to stop him is quite suspenseful.

On a technical level, this movie isn't perfect, as some of the transitions from scene to scene are awkward, and there's at least one shot of unconvincing "day for night", but Le Samorai does have its share of well done framing, camera movement and cross-cutting.

This film also plays its hand pretty well when deciding to use a score; scenes either have suspenseful music, to put viewers on the edge, or no music at all in order to provide a dry, unsentimental tone.

Though Le Samorai is widely considered a classic, I'm not in love with it, as noirs generally bore me. That said, so many people consider this film to be great that I'm curious what the Sards have to say about it. If there's something they see in it that I don't, then I'm all ears .

In any case, I don't regret watching this movie, and regardless of if the Sards enjoy it or not, I think that it would make for a worthwhile discussion.
