"Buy Nothing" groups are a disaster

Edit: It has come to my attention that the title of this post may be misleading, so I wanted to clarify. I absolutely love and support the concept of Buy Nothing groups, and I think it is a great idea to help reduce waste and consumption. And I'm glad that so many people seem to have had positive experiences with their group! However, it seems that my experience and several other peoples' has been less than ideal unfortunately - whether this is due to the platform (usually Facebook), poor moderation, or other reasons. I was very optimistic about my local group and was ultimately disappointed, but I have since learned that my experience is not universal and there are many well-run and successful Buy Nothing group. I appreciate all the recommendations for alternatives!

I joined a local Buy Nothing group on Facebook so that I could give unwanted items to people who would use/appreciate them. However, I have found that the attitude in this group has been atrocious. I posted a very nice electric fireplace that I just didn't need any longer, and wanted it to go to someone who really needed it. People "claimed" the item by simply posting "Next!" or "Want!" and were upset that I didn't go in the order the item was "claimed" (the group rules suggested letting the item "simmer" and then picking someone which is what I did).

Then today, the moderator of the group told me I could no longer participate in the group because I live in a rural area about 20 minutes outside of the city, not in the city itself. I would understand if this were an issue of distance that made it inconvenient for people to come pick items up, but I have been offering to drop off items on people's doorstep because I know it is a bit out of their way. The mod knows this because I offered to bring an item to her that she wanted, and that's how she found out I lived just outside of the city.

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but overall I'm just very frustrated. I joined this group to try to give back to my community while also being zero waste, but it seems to be more hassle than it's worth :(
