Feyre and Nesta’s relationship
Is it just me that recognises the inconsistencies of their relationship especially from acotar to acomaf? I always wondered why Nesta and Feyre never fully reached a place of a genuine connection and relationship built on clear love and trust. But after rereading the series…I spotted inconsistencies and just flaws, but honestly, the overarching reason why they never had it easy…is because of the Inner Circle, mainly Rhys and Cassian inserting themselves in their business and drama
But let’s begin in acotar. Feyre resented Nesta, that is clear…every interaction, Feyre takes insult to everything Nesta says or does even when it doesn’t make sense. I appreciate towards the end that Feyre is capable of self reflection and understands that Nesta is far more complex then just “bitter and rude”, that in majority of their interactions that Feyre took as rude, was Nesta genuinely caring about her, I.e the mercenary and the Children of the Blessed. Once Feyre starts to understand Nesta slightly and recognises the depth of Nesta’s character, Feyre slowly starts to open up to her
Likewise with Nesta, although she wasn’t as kind to Feyre as she was to Elain, Nesta LOVES Feyre and is willing to do anything to protect her, her failing is that it’s seen from Feyre’s frustrated and victim POV (I whole heartedly believe that Nesta would’ve sold her body for Feyre just as much for Elain). When Feyre is taken to Prythian, it’s Nesta that treks two days to the Wall to try and save her sister. It is obvious that Nesta loves Feyre. And Feyre comes back from Prythian, despite having recently just endured a traumatic experience (almost getting raped by Tomas/getting assaulted), Nesta is still the one that sits with Feyre and listens to her as Feyre explained everything that happened to her, Nesta expresses forgiveness and understanding for Feyre for what happened to HER FRIEND, Clare…and after all of that, Nesta asks her sister to teach her how to paint, to allow her sister to express herself and an opportunity to share her talent and art with her. (Nesta appreciates Feyre’s love for painting and even kept some of it with her after they’d moved to their new manor). It’s these interactions that had me believing that we were going the right direction. They were starting to understand each other and love each other in a more positive way. Nesta shows genuine admiration for Feyre and her strength and her ability to fight for what she loves, and when Feyre chooses to go back to Prythian, it’s Nesta that makes Feyre promise her that she would come back one day to tell her everything, to tell her that she’s still alive and happy and well. It’s Feyre that believes that Nesta could do anything if she dared, if only she had a place and a people she could genuinely call home. This is the beautiful and incredible conclusion of two sisters that have been neglected and abused, two sisters who are two sides of the same coin, two sisters who have quarried with each other so badly that they’d hurt each other (it’s not one sided peole, Feyre is just as guilty when it came to how toxic their relationship was, Feyre admits this). And I loved how organic and realistic it was
Then come acomaf and it feels like we took 10 steps back from how we’d ended things in acotar. I was actually genuinely excited to see Nesta again, but Feyre immediately expected Nesta to be cold to her…and I was disappointed. Nesta isn’t as kind as she could be, she doesn’t express genuine concern about what had happened to Feyre, not as much as she did in acotar. Although they do have conversations when Nesta feels sympathy for Feyre and how things between her and Tamlin ended, it’s still feels so…tense?…it’s like everything was retconned. We know Nesta to be aloof and cold, but even between that bitterness and anger…she cares deeply, more deeply then most and is not afraid to show it sometimes. But here, she wasn’t nearly as affectionate as I’d hoped she would be. And I hated Sarah’s writing choice here because it didn’t make sense, she just LITERALLY retconned that beautiful reconciliation between the sisters, and they were on the right path.
