3 Player multiplayer

I love multiplayer, especially 2v2, since it adds a layer of depth to the game, but Altered being playable at either 2 or 4 players makes it frustrating when you want to play with only two friends.

Two friends and I came up with a way to play without having to take turns:

The rules are exactly the same as in 4 players, but the setup of the tumult cards are different. Take two sets of tumult cards, and put them by identical pairs before shuffling the pairs around (just like they published). Then, place the cards face down as in the pattern below. Each color represents a single type of tumult card.

You will only need three starting tumult cards, and you will have to ignore what they say and make it so each Hero expedition is facing a companion expedition. This ensures each player faces one of each expedition, which is important because of hero powers.

And there you go! Follow the other rules of multiplayer and you can play.

There might be some implications that are different from the official formats they published, namely the swapped expedition and the fact that each expedition has their last 2 tumult cards swapped from their opponent's. I think the most important is that symmetry is maintained (it would be a problem if someone faced 0 or 2 companion expeditions, which is where the expedition-specific hero powers happen, at least for now) and that each player has all three different tumult cards to cross.

Did you try other ways to play with three players?
