Horizontal positioning for XY drum mic overheads?

I have a Zoom H6 that I bought for recording jam sessions, which has 4 XLR inputs and an attachment at the top that's an XY pair of microphones going into one stereo channel. I'll have a kick drum mic and an SM57 for the snare, and for getting the rest of the kit I plan on using the bundled XY-pair mics (can toggle between a 90 degree and 120 degree angle placement), but placing it in a proper position over the kit puts the H6 in an awkward position to control it's buttons and whatnot.

In an ideal world I'd use my ears, record a bunch of different positions, play them back and see which one is best, but we're on limited time in this rehearsal space so I'm asking if anyone has experience with this kind of setup and would have suggestions for where to place the XY-pair mic (or where not to, for that matter). Is anywhere in front of the kit fine? Or are there "sweet spots" I should aim for?
