Dr wants me to retract baby’s foreskin???

My 17 month old went for his first check up today with his new pediatrician (we moved 40 minutes away from old doctor). All went well, she asked me if she could check his diaper area and I said yes. It looked like she was about to retract his foreskin and I said, “oh, please don’t.” I’d heard too many horror stories about uncircumcised babies being injured when having their foreskin pulled back. His old pediatrician had never done that before. She then asked me if I’d ever retracted it before and that I had too because it was too tight. That I’d have to retract it and clean it because urine could get stuck in there.

Again, I’ve heard stories about how most American doctors not being familiar with the care of a child’s uncircumcised penis. Parents of other uncircumcised boys, what advice are you getting from your pediatricians??? Am I supposed to retract it??? What are guys doing in other countries to clean them, where being uncircumcised is the norm? I’m very skittish about the whole situation, I don’t wanna injure him. Any advice welcome.

Edit: thanks for all the advice everyone! I can't help but feel angry now? The more I think of it, the more I dislike this clinic now for my baby and the one who's coming in July. The doctor seemed nice enough but she seems behind on information regarding uncircumcised care. A nurse there jabbed my baby with his vaccine in a very harsh manner and he's still in pain today and doesn't want to walk or have his leg touched at all...I called the clinic and they insist everything is fine but I'm starting to think it's not. Just wow, this was a terrible first experience there.
