Gaggiuino MOD (Lego) completed (almost)
Hello coffee lovers!
I finished the Gaggiuino build today. The functional part, at least.
Need to print the display enclosure, but I have non-standard 3.5" display and no knowledge of Blender, so it will require some more effort to complete.
I started buying parts on Aliexpress around June 2024 and the last one arrived just last Wed. Because they sent incorrect parts twice (it was my fault the first time, the second one sellers'). Other things I had to order twice because It got lost (we had a post office strike that time).
The assemble itself is medium level of difficulty, I would say. I organized hard challenges by myself because I bought a differently sized display. Didn't know at the beginning that the display is a big problem of this project. (one of the latest commits has message "shitxtion hates programmers")
I got a lot of new experience debugging this project in VSCode with PIO, even listening to the USART signals using a special hardware. I needed all of these just to clarify issues with the display. It has a binary firmware that is compiled in their ugly looking proprietary program that lacks many basic features.
So, that I want to say for the big audience here...
1) This mod is amazing.
2) The author of this mod, questionable.
3) The Discord community- solved almost any possible issue.
4) Instructions are correct, I hope they will not delete the source code.
I'm thinking, are you interested in a full sized video about the mod assembly experience or there are enough of it on the internet?
Generally speaking, I have only two doubts:
1) For some reason I decided that this project was an open source, but it actually wasn't. And now it's fully commercial. You must buy a license*.
*the old Lego build is still available but there is no any development planned.
2) The community was helpful, but it didn’t seem ready for a dialogue. Any discussions about the code base, sensor choices, or support for different displays were met with the response, 'You can do whatever you want, but we can’t help you with that.'. Now I understand that they didn't have any interest because new version is significantly different and somehow profitable. Hope it will not destroy the whole project in the longer perspective.
Besides that I'm extremely satisfied with the result and experience.
