How to stop screen flashing black?

So I've got this really weird issue with my TV where there's always a brief moment (like a fraction of a second) where the screen turns off whenever the content displayed on screen is just empty and black (example: when a video fades to black between scenes) But it always happens just after that fade so it ends up interrupting what I'm watching. It's really irritating and distracting, I've looked through the settings to see if it's some kind of function to save energy when the screen is empty but I haven't found anything.
