How do you decide what to take with you?

I haven't played TLD in a very long time so I started a new run in Mountain Town. I never fully explored all the areas so I decided to explore everthing before I move on to the next area. I'm gathering a lot of stuff and storing everything in my base (grey mother's house), doing all my repairing, harvesting, cooking and restocking there. I'm sure I'll run out of supplies when it's time to move on, but in case I don't, how do you decide what to keep and what to leave behind?
