Comped drinks etiquette?

My friends and I like to hit area bars like Stage Door, Golden Tiki, etc. When small places like this have video poker, is it cool for us to ask about comped drinks when we're playing? Or is that practice reserved for actual large-scale casinos? Thanks for helping out a rookie!
